If you have ever had or heard of Colombian coffee, you owe thanks in part to the family that owns and runs Santa Barbara Estate in Antioquia. Don Pedro Echavarria’s family got its start in coffee through their great-great-grandfather, Don Alejandro. He was instrumental in building Colombia’s access to the American and European markets, and delivering a consistent product that consumers fell in love with and came to know as the classic Colombia “mild”.
Fast-forward a hundred years, and Santa Barbara is still on the cutting edge. San Pascual is a smaller farm near the estate and is a natural-processed coffee. It is a high-grown Castillo variety, and the cup shines with green apple acidity, through the lens of the sweet natural profile.
Lastly, Santa Barbara has concentrated their social responsibility projects on two key issues: education and individual land ownership. They work with different primary schools around both estates in order to guarantee that they have the adequate infrastructure and resources to function properly. They also have a strong program to provide financial aid and full scholarships to the sons and daughters of the estate workers that want to get a higher education. This coffee complies with our Home Grown Coffee Initiative.
