PURPOSE

Work on the front line of our retail division, represent Swing’s and serve as the last link in the seed-to-cup chain. Prepare and serve coffee, espresso, and other beverages and serve baked goods to customers.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

  • Customer service/food service/retail experience
  • Specialty coffee experience a plus, not a prerequisite
  • HS diploma or GED

KNOWLEDGE

  • Retail/customer service standards: understand standards of conduct in retail setting, importance of honesty, integrity, and respect for customers and coworkers
  • Food safety standards: understand importance of hygiene and cleanliness in food & beverage preparation
  • Coffee & Espresso: employees are expected to understand our drink menu and coffee offerings; also, preparation standards/recipes and best practices must be followed

SKILLS

WORK CONTEXT

Specialty coffee shop:

  • Dynamic, fast-paced retail environment: sometimes very busy, very noisy during “rush” times
  • Early morning shifts, weekend shifts (at Del Ray, Saturdays at 14th & G)

EXPECTATIONS

  • Arrive at work on time, follow company dress code, abide standards of conduct
  • Work efficiently, multitasking in a fast-paced environment
  • Maintain clean work area and retail space, follow safe food-handling practices, refrain from eating and excessive phone use while at work
  • Maintain composure and focus during busy times; communicate effectively with customers
  • Stay motivated and active during slow times; perform side-work tasks (cleaning/stocking/etc)
  • Follow instructions from supervisors, cooperate with fellow coworkers, follow best practices
  • Treat customers, coworkers, managers, and company property with respect

TASKS/ACTIVITIES

  • Welcome and attend to customers. Answer questions about food, beverages, and coffee offerings. Provide pleasant and courteous service
  • Maintain tidy and organized bakery display
  • Ensure supply of fresh batch-brewed coffee
  • Stock and clean the store (set up coffee portions, lids, straws, napkins; wipe down counters/tables, etc.)
  • Prepare and serve brewed coffee, pourovers, iced coffee, tea, etc.
  • Prepare and serve espresso-based beverages; maintain espresso quality by dialing-in and checking-in
  • Call out drink orders clearly with confident delivery
  • Wash dishes, sweep & mop floor, clean restrooms, take out trash & recycling
  • Attend training and education sessions to develop and enhance skills and expertise in coffee
  • Other tasks as assigned (*keyholding* baristas may be asked to open & setup or close & lockup)
