Nestled in the southeastern reaches of Ethiopia’s expansive Oromia region, Guji is a remote, forested sanctuary where coffee grows wild amidst breathtaking natural beauty and rich biodiversity. In the heart of the forest, where coffee thrives untamed, delicate calla lilies grace the landscape, adding quiet elegance to the lush greenery. Accessing this rugged terrain is no easy feat—its few entrances demand resilience and a strong stomach for the journey.
Guji’s lush, primary forests owe their preservation to the Guji tribe, a proud part of Ethiopia’s diverse Oromo nation. For generations, they have fought tirelessly to protect these sacred lands, pushing back against mining and logging operations to maintain the canopy that defines their home.
However, this commitment to conservation often presents challenges for the region’s coffee farmers. The journey to bring their coffee to market can be as demanding as the terrain itself. Last harvest season, approximately 137 farmers, each cultivating an average of just 2 hectares, delivered their cherries to the Shakiso washing station—proof of their dedication to producing some of the finest coffees in the world.
Savor this coffee’s bright notes of soft lemon crème, balanced beautifully with hints of milk chocolate.
